Description

My gift to you; thank you for visiting:

What could be as simple as a circle representing a pie or “the whole”?
What’s a picture worth?

Teaching is my skill set; I’ve related my understanding and skill of many complex studies to others of many ages.  There are few opportunities that relate to so many areas as does a circle and the ratios within it.  Specifically intended for homeschool, this is a simple spreadsheet that Moms, Dads, and tutors don’t have to create, but can use immediately to reinforce many concepts and allow a state change*.

The opportunities for teachable moments are numerous:

  1. analyze a list of expenses
  2. consider economic priorities
  3. tie budget tightening with goals
  4. convert “I want” into “let’s plan”
  5. learn to convert fractions to decimals
  6. learn to convert decimals to fractions
  7. learn to use a compass
  8. learn to use a protractor
  9. and then there’s geometry… another time.

Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Analyze a shopping list (start small) and compare percentages of meats, to vegetables, dry goods, toiletries, and extras and prioritize or find items to cut or hold until next visit.
  2. Analyze any customizable aspiration from trips abroad to gaming systems and compare the components to the overall cost then tie it to a budget to prioritize.
  3. Have your junior high or high school student analyze the worksheet and rebuild it (spreadsheet skills) adding expanded ideas to meet their own specific application (like a sortable category column).  Have your student add the page to another workbook and reassign the data column (med-advanced).

Combined with the Monthly Budget Worksheet, Savings Goal Workbook, or even the Auto Log (also FREE) exercises in economics, entrepreneurship, finance, investing, and many others.  “How much of your [or a sample] portfolio is in green energy?”  “Which of the current expenses will you eliminate to fund your higher priority goal?”  (opportunity cost).

It was a simple exercise, offered free to you for coming to see how else I might “make myself useful”.  Do poke around the site and see what else you might find helpful.  It was as much fun writing this description to offer you hints for its use as it was creating the worksheet!  Enjoy!

* A “state change” is a shift in the approach or application of the learning environment.  You may be within the same topic and subject, but now dealing with the information in a slightly different way, allowing the brain to “reset” to another perspective.  In the learning environment it’s like mentally getting up to stretch your legs… refreshing!
